Messier 94: a cosmic crossover that goes beyond the ice rink - and into space! Captured here by @NASAHubble, the spiral galaxy M94 is located about 16 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. It belongs to the Messier catalog, a stargazing resource first compiled by the French astronomer Charles Messier in the 1700s.⁣ ⁣ Hockey fans may remember another Messier 94 on this day. Thirty years ago, on June 14, 1994, legendary captain Mark Messier and the New York Rangers lifted the Stanley Cup. The trophy is primarily made of silver and nickel, both elements forged from stellar explosions and merging neutron stars. Like everything else in the @NASAUniverse, the Stanley Cup is indeed made of star stuff!⁣ ⁣ Astronomers suggest that the starburst ring in M94 was formed by a pressure wave moving outward from the galaxy’s center—reminiscent of the electrifying energy of fans in a packed arena.⁣ ⁣ While this year’s Stanley Cup champions have yet to be crowned, the universe may hold some clues.⁣ ⁣ Image description: A massive spiral galaxy fills the image. Rhapsody in blue 🎶 This cosmic nebula, a cloud of gas and dust where new stars are born, was spotted by our orbiting @NASAHubble telescope. Located just over 5,300 light-years from Earth, this nebula is home to a number of young, developing stars called protostars, which show up as some of the smaller sparkles in this image. The Hubble data in this image came from the telescope's Wide Field Camera 3, which peered through the nebula's cocoon of gas with near-infrared vision to study the stars within. This particular nebula is rich with hydrogen ions which are excited by the ultraviolet radiation coming from the nebula's protostars, giving it the pinkish glow seen here. Around the world, around the world ✨⁣ ⁣ Sixteen times each day, astronauts on the International Space Station (@ISS) experience an orbital sunrise and sunset as the station orbits Earth. Space potato 🥔 Phobos is the larger of Mars' two moons—but it's still only about 17 x 14 x 11 miles (27 by 22 by 18 kilometers) in diameter. Because Phobos is so small, its gravity isn't strong enough to pull it into a sphere (like Earth's Moon), giving it its lumpy shape. Phobos is also on a collision course with Mars—though it'll take a while to get there. It's nearing the Red Planet at a rate of six feet (1.8 meters) every hundred years. At that rate, the moon will either crash into Mars in 50 million years or break up into a ring. This image was taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on our Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been studying Mars since 2006. The stars, they aligned 🎶   See how those bright red, clumpy streaks in the top left are all slanted in the same direction to the same degree? They show aligned protostellar outflows, or jets of gas from newborn stars. @NASAWebb captures this phenomenon for the first time.   “Astronomers have long assumed that as clouds collapse to form stars, the stars will tend to spin in the same direction,” said principal investigator Klaus Pontoppidan of @NASAJPL. “However, this has not been seen so directly before. These aligned, elongated structures are a historical record of the fundamental way that stars are born.”   Previously, the objects appeared as blobs or were invisible in optical wavelengths. Webb’s sensitive infrared vision was able to pierce through the thick dust, resolving the stars and their outflows.   This area is part of the Serpens Nebula. Located 1,300 light-years from Earth, it’s only 1-2 million years old — very young in cosmic terms! Crew aboard the @ISS captured this photo of Galveston, Texas on February 17, 2020. Galveston is where Juneteenth – the June 19 holiday celebrating the day enslaved people there learned they were freed – began.   President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, but news did not reach Confederate-controlled Galveston until April 1865, when Union troops arrived to inform the people of Texas that all enslaved people were free. As news of General Order No. 3 (issued June 19) spread, spontaneous celebrations broke out in African American churches, homes, and other gathering places. What’re you looking at? 🐢 Our @NASAKennedy center is home to rockets that launch @NASAAstronauts and satellites into space—but it’s also a habitat to countless plants and animals, like this Florida redbelly turtle. Kennedy shares space with the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses 92,000 acres of land, marsh, and water for 331 species of birds, 31 mammals, 117 fishes, and 65 amphibians and reptiles. In addition to turtles, the refuge is a wintering area for migratory birds, and a year-round home for great blue herons, great egrets, wood storks, cormorants, and brown pelicans. Some give their children the world, others give them space. ⭐ Our Galileo spacecraft was named for a father of modern astronomy, Galileo Galilei. Galileo was the first mission to measure Jupiter’s atmosphere directly with a descent probe, and the first to conduct long-term observations of the jovian system from orbit. Galileo orbited Jupiter for almost eight years and made close passes by all its major moons. It found evidence of subsurface liquid layers of saltwater on Europa, Ganymede and Callisto and it examined a diversity of volcanic activity on Io. Its camera and nine other instruments sent back reports that allowed scientists to determine, among other things, that Jupiter’s icy moon Europa probably has a subsurface ocean with more water than the total amount found on Earth. They discovered that the volcanoes of the moon Io repeatedly and rapidly resurface the little world. They found that the giant moon Ganymede possesses its own magnetic field. Galileo even carried a small probe that it deployed and sent deep into the atmosphere of Jupiter, taking readings for almost an hour before the probe was crushed by overwhelming pressure. Stand out above the crowd ✨⁣ ⁣ This is NGC 2005. It’s a glittery star cluster – a globular cluster – and it’s kinda weird. NGC 2005’s stars have a chemical composition that is distinct from the stars around it in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the Milky Way’s largest satellite galaxy.⁣ ⁣ This suggests that the LMC underwent a merger with another galaxy somewhere in its history. That other galaxy has long-since merged and otherwise scattered, but NGC 2005 remains as an ancient witness to the merger.⁣ ⁣ Globular clusters are large and dense, containing several thousand to millions of stars all formed from a shared nebula. These clusters are stable and contain some of the oldest known stars in a galaxy, so they’re an excellent laboratory to study galaxy evolution.⁣ ⁣ Image description: A globular cluster that looks like a very dense, ball-shaped collection of many shining stars in colors of white, yellow-orange, and blue. Some stars appear a bit larger and brighter than others, with the brightest having faint cross-shaped diffraction spikes. Purple rain… purple rain ☂️⁣ ⁣ The purple color in this video shows auroras across Mars’ nightside as detected by the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph instrument aboard NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) orbiter. The brighter the purple, the more auroras were present. Taken as waves of energetic particles from a solar storm were arriving at Mars, the sequence pauses at the end, when the wave of the most energetic particles arrived and overwhelmed the instrument with noise.⁣ ⁣ The way these auroras occur is different than those seen on Earth. Our home planet is shielded from charged particles by a robust magnetic field, which normally limits auroras to regions near the poles. (Solar maximum is the reason behind the recent auroras seen as far south as Alabama.) Mars lost its internally generated magnetic field in the ancient past, so there’s no protection from the barrage of energetic particles. When charged particles hit the Martian atmosphere, it results in auroras that engulf the entire planet.⁣ ⁣ MAVEN took these images between May 14 and 20, 2024, as the spacecraft orbited below Mars, looking up at the nightside of the planet (Mars’ south pole can be seen on the right, in full sunlight).
