When her young family started to outgrow their old house, a classic midcentury-modern gem in Beachwood Canyon, Brynn Jones Saban was in denial. The house may have been perfect during her and her husband Ness's 20s, but it lacked storage space and didn’t have a yard, both growing concerns for the couple, who planned on having more kids. “We were already kind of bursting at the seams,” Jones Saban says. But when she toured a 1920s English Tudor on the market in LA’s Los Feliz neighborhood, a new beginning didn’t seem so daunting. “There’s a coziness to the whole flow of the house,” Jones Saban said. “It just felt like a home for a family.” The couple enlisted Frances Merrill, founder of the #AD100 firm @reathdesign, to mastermind a refresh of the interiors. Nestled in the heart of the West Village, this six-story, five-bedroom townhouse presented itself as the ideal New York City pied-à-terre for a California-based family. Purchased by Darin Adler, an esteemed Apple engineer, and his wife Diane Patterson, a writer, the abode had all the space and potential, but nothing that made it feel like home. A modern new construction, the primary challenge of the townhouse was “un-developing” it, a task that was wholeheartedly taken on by Holly Waterfield, of #ADPRODirectory firm Holly Waterfield Interior Design (@waterfieldholly_interiors), in collaboration with Susan Galvani of #APRODirectory firm @spruceinterior. When most designers take on a new project, they come armed with moodboards, themes, and a clear vision. This was not the case with #ADPRODirectory firm @andandandstudio’s latest commission, a rehabbed midcentury home tucked in a bohemian enclave of Laurel Canyon. Because of the staggered renovation timeline—and a pair of long-term clients who gave designers Daniel Rabin and Annie Ritz near-total creative freedom—the project unfolded like a novel written without an outline. “It was like designing almost in reverse,” Rabin says. “The house is a jewel of Mexican architecture designed by Andrés Casillas de Alba, so I wanted to respect his original vision; our goal was only to give a new life to the interiors” shares Alejandro Fernández (@alexoficial) of the home he shares with Karla Laveaga (@karlaveaga) in Guadalajara. “I wanted to live with my feet in the water,” architect and cofounder of @caprinipellerin Jerry Pellerin says, referencing the French expression “les pieds dans l’eau.” This place gave him that feeling instantly. Tucked into the verdant hills above Cannes, France, in a coveted residential enclave known as “Lower California,” Villa Nicky overlooks the shimmering Mediterranean with a serene, almost cinematic quality. It all started with an Instagram story: “Does anyone know an architect in Madrid?” Juan wrote on a photo of a 540-square-foot rooftop apartment in ruins. Thanks to some mutual friends, Juan’s post reached Emiliano Domingo, the founder of the architecture studio Bardo (@bardo.arq). With the help of structural engineer Manuel Ocaña (@fastfuriousoffice), Domingo was able to revive the structure and create separate living zones by utilizing a variety of bold colors and materials. In the Rione di Ponte district, a top-floor Rome apartment in the former Renaissance headquarters of the Papal Mint has been meticulously restored. The space reflects its long history with original wooden beams and cotto romano (terracotta tile) floors. The renovation by Paris-based @studio_malia created a stately residence with vintage elements and colorful, lively accents. The color that is a common theme throughout the apartment is a deep red, found in many old Roman homes, which is used in exactly the right doses, like punctuation marks. “She wanted it to be a bit irreverent—something fresh, colorful, and bold that reflected her personality” says #ADPRODirectory designer Fern Santini (@fernsantini). To find inspiration For Austin-based entrepreneur Amy Wilson Janice's new home, they looked for cues from the past. “I showed her things that are important to me,” shares Janice, who was born and raised in New Orleans. One of those things, as it turned out, was a dishware set from the 1970s passed down by her mom. “It was beautiful,” Santini chimes in—so beautiful that she used it to set the tone for the kitchen palette. “It was a literal, modern barn raising,” says @carterdesign cofounder Cy Carter of this serene Vermont home. “We wanted to use a lot of wood and a lot of warmth so that you felt held as you looked out over all these views.” Beloved furnishings sourced from the family’s personal collection create a cozy ambiance throughout. Instead of clashing with the modern profile of the structure, Carter’s wife and partner Genevieve White Carter found that the “textures and colors really do sing,” she says.
