Earl Sweatshirt’s Battle with Depression, Substance Abuse, Death, and Loneliness In 2009, a young Tyler, the Creator founded the hip-hop collective ‘Odd Future. The first artist to join was Thebe Kgositsile, originally known as Sly Tendencies, but soon to be recognized as Earl Sweatshirt. In 2010, at just 16 years old, Earl released his debut project, “Earl” quickly earning the respect and attention of lyrically starved Hip-Hop fans. However, as his music gained traction, his career was abruptly put on hold. Concerned about his negative influences and behavior, his mother intervened. Earl had been smoking weed, cheating in school, and possibly experimenting with other substances. In an effort to steer him away from bad influences, separate from Odd Future. In hopes of getting Earl the change he needed, his mother sent him to boarding school. While he was gone, fans would chant “Free Earl” at Odd Future shows, eagerly awaiting his return. When he finally came back, he threw himself into music, releasing “Doris” in 2013, followed by “I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside” in 2015. Both projects resonated deeply with fans, offering raw honesty about his struggles with substance abuse, parental absence, depression, and isolation. Earl’s music wasn’t a conceptual exploration of mental health-it was a candid portrayal of his reality, capturing the weight of daily battles with depression. After promoting *IDLSIDGO*, he disappeared from the spotlight. A few singles dropped in 2016, giving his fans hope for a new album, but no project was released. Then, in 2018, just as he teased new music and an upcoming tour, tragedy struck-his estranged father passed away. The loss compounded his struggles, deepening his depression. Later that year, he released his third studio album, which took an unexpected turn sonically—a stark departure from what fans were used to. The project received mixed reactions, with some criticizing its experimental nature while others praised its emotional depth and again raw honesty. Though it’s unclear whether Earl still battles depression, he appears to have overcome many of his struggles. ✍️ @tonsil
