“My biggest pet peeve is when people find the most beautiful home and modernize it beyond belief,” says Sean Famoso, cofounder of LVRN Records. Thankfully, he means it. When Sean started the housing search, he knew exactly what he was—and wasn’t—looking for. Having grown up in a Craftsman house in Atlanta, he was set on finding a midcentury with warmth and character rather than a minimalist box. “I wanted a house with a soul of its own,” @seanfamoso says. When he put in a bid for this 2,022-square-foot 1950 home, he initially lost out to another buyer. But as luck would have it, the two-bedroom, three-bathroom house went back on the market almost immediately—albeit for an additional $200K. Charmed by its floor-to-ceiling views of the city, Sean swooped in to close the deal. With the help of @tyalves and @taryn.echeverry of @thecurator_la, he sensitively updated the interiors without losing the personality that attracted him to the space in the first place. Moving to New Orleans on your third date sounds like the makings of a romantic comedy, but for designer, author, and artist @Dabito, it became the foundation for creating his dream home. “The goal was to make it feel truly at home, drawing on Creole cottages, Eastlake and Italianate elements so it looks like it’s always been part of the neighborhood,” Dabito says of the custom home he shares with his third-date-turned-husband Ryan. Another priority? Creating a space that honors the city’s architectural heritage while remaining comfortable in a famously unforgiving climate. In the spring of 2020, Manny retreated from his home in Guatemala City to his family’s finca, or ranch, in the highlands 35 miles to the west. At first he lived with his parents in their two-bedroom 1960s home, but he fell in love with country living and decided to stay. His parents granted him some space on the working farm to build his own home, and @mannyrionda, a fashion photographer and furniture designer, got to work on his first project. Casa Zanate, as Manny named it, doesn’t immediately reveal itself. Manny minimized its footprint to avoid damaging the coffee, macadamia, and guava trees on the site, and the home—a 1,480-square-foot, single-story box—is shrouded in greenery. “The trees here are sacred, since it takes almost a decade for them to flower,” Manny explains. Cantilevered concrete steps draw visitors in and lead to a floating deck that wraps around the home’s flat front facade, connecting to a spacious side terrace hovering among the leaves. Above it all is the rooftop terrace, with a hot tub and an outdoor kitchen sheltered by a corrugated metal pergola and the surrounding trees. Manny, who gave up photography for years to design this house, says, “This is my first home, and it was playful and innocent. I had no formal training.” Fortunately, the highlands are a great teacher. In 2017, Deborah was walking on the beach with no other people except a lone fisherman: “It was like a dream,” she says. The Venezuelan artist was visiting from New York City for an art fair at the time, but she felt a pull to stay. After enough asking around, Deborah found and bought a lot just a six-minute stroll from the beach. Together with her longtime friend, designer Ana Lasala, Deborah began envisioning a home that could embrace Puerto Escondido’s contrasts. Here, the Pacific brings waves that attract surfers from all over the world but also hurricanes. And the abundant sunshine—another tourist draw—demands creative solutions for shade and cooling. @profundaa and @analasala, who runs architecture firm Lasala & Lasala with her sister, came up with Palapa Concreta, a 1,560-square-foot structure reminiscent of an A-frame cabin enclosed by a palapa roof—a traditional thatching made with palm leaves. The only walls on the lower level of the home are around the bathroom and where the roof meets the ground. Otherwise, nature and fresh air sweep through an open kitchen and a living area designed for socializing. “Everything is continuous,” Lasala says. “I always try to bring the indoors out and the outdoors in—it’s a conversation between both languages.” Now complete, the home is designed not to resist the area’s contrasting natural forces but to evolve with them. It wasn’t just that they wanted a place to grow old in. David and Mark wanted a place to grow old with them—a house that would bear, with unfussy equanimity, the various marks of its making and remaking and maturation. “There’s a lot of ‘finish fetish’ with architects,” says @dvdrss, an architect himself and director of design at @frederickfisherandpartners in Los Angeles. “There’s a tendency that, with whatever you create, it has to stand still and never age.” That’s not the house they’ve built on a little footprint of 32 by 32 feet, along with a small studio for Mark, an artist, just a few steps away. Their single-story home, unassuming in the earthy black asphalt of its shingle exterior and its plan of four equal-size rooms that form a continuous loop, is a monument to dynamism, contingency, and transience. In 2025, pets are rarely relegated to the doghouse. The proof is in the numbers: Millennials, many of whom are delaying or not having children, are investing in their pets: 70 percent of 983 surveyed millennial and Gen Z pet owners report having a budget solely for their pets, according to a study by The Harris Poll. “When I was younger, our dog was in the yard,” says interior designer @kishaniperera, whose recent work includes a laundry room with a walk-in dog shower and home office with an eight-foot-tall cat tree. “It was what some people call a one-butt kitchen.” When Caroline and Joel stepped inside their new home, they knew the existing kitchen was not going to cut it. “It was too boxed in,” Caroline elaborates. Meaning: no counter space and just enough room for one person to maneuver at a time. While they both love to cook, Caroline is a food and beverage stylist and is “always in the kitchen doing something,” she says. “Food and cooking are very important to me.” Naturally, the space is, too. Shortly after moving in, the couple called their friend, architect Brad Engelsman of @bedastudio, hoping to make the kitchen more of a centerpiece. Having known the couple for so many years and seen their previous homes, Engelsman says: “They have a lot of cool stuff… so it was about finding these little moments, like the corners of the island or the small wood shelves to display those things.” But the personal moments go even deeper in the renovation. The elements the couple finally moved forward with—like the handmade backsplash tile and the custom island—all come with personal stories. Caroline found the tile on a scouting road trip in Mexico, while the island was inspired by the couple’s trip to Marfa years ago. Now complete, the redesigned space is a far cry from the “box” that was there before. “It’s something that we made into our own,” says Joel.
