Crazy to think about the little girl who religiously studied the cartoons in my parent’s @newyorkermag knowing that one day, for their 100th anniversary issue, her and her son would be included in the magazine amongst 25 icons including Gloria Steinem, Martin Scorsese, Colson Whitehead, AOC, DVF and Al Sharpton as “Notable New Yorkers”. To unlearn the myths we’re told—and reclaim beauty on your own terms? “Like most women, my relationship to beauty has been fraught. My experience has been particular, I started modeling as a child at the age of 12. I learned early in my life to think of beauty primarily as a commodifiable asset. It’s been over twenty years of working as a person who sells my image; my beauty. It’s only been in the last few years, after making things, after becoming the artist instead of the muse and after becoming a mother, that I’ve started to think of beauty in a more expansive way.
