Cofounders of @luckychap Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley (Robbie’s husband), and Josey McNamara have never been drawn to a typical office environment. “We’ve always been averse to conference rooms,” says McNamara, noting that LuckyChap’s earliest HQ was no more than a kitchen bench in a London flat. So they called on Scarlett Hessian (@studio.hessian), a longtime friend and collaborator, to help them transform the space. “When they first showed me the building, I was a bit horrified, to be honest,” the interior designer confesses. Now, despite the unassuming exterior the interiors tell a different story: one that’s layered, textural, and quietly cinematic. With high vaulted ceilings and an airy mezzanine, Hessian saw the architecture as a starting point. “We decided to lean into its midcentury style and bring in a mix of European pieces to give it personality,” she says. When the owner of this New York loft called on @gachotstudios the original idea was to give the space a surface-level refresh. “But when you pull the thread on the sweater, it slowly unravels,” says John Gachot (@johngachot), who runs the practice with his wife, Christine. Perched on the top three floors of a late 19th-century building in Soho with a “premier cast-iron facade that’s right out of the book,” the loft had had work done, but “hadn’t been lived in for a while and felt a little dated,” John says. As talks progressed, the client, who works in the fashion industry, decided to go deeper with the renovation to make the home truly feel like his own. To live in one of the storybook homes that populates New Orleans’s Garden District—with their extravagant ironwork and gingerbread detailing—is, in many ways, to reside within a piece of history. The majority of the properties date back to the 19th century, when the area was developed as a fashionable enclave for wealthy Americans seeking refuge from the bustling French Quarter. Now, it remains one of the best preserved historic neighborhoods in the country, with tree-lined streets, manicured gardens, and a community-wide reverence for architectural heritage. So for a Louisiana native like the #ADPRODirectory interior designer Olivia Erwin (@oliviaerwin), being charged with the restoration of one of these grand dames was a homecoming honor. As we continue Frank Lloyd Wright month, we're looking at the David and Gladys Wright House. Wright designed the residence in 1950 for his fourth son, David, and his daughter-in-law Gladys, who lived in the home until their respective deaths in 1997 and 2008. Spanning 2,553 square feet, the interior includes three bedrooms and four bathrooms, with each room arranged in an “in-line plan,” rooms arranged in continuous succession. The circular home surrounds an interior courtyard, which included a pool, though it has since been filled in. Inside The Belnord—a storied block-long residential building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side that also stars in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building—two collectors Elizabeth and her husband have created a striking art-filled New York home. Elizabeth met Hadas Dembo, a photography director turned designer, via a mutual friend in an impromptu consult, “which wasn’t originally meant to be a consult,” but turned into a serendipitous collaboration between like minds. “The departure point was, really, the art,” says Dembo, who runs #ADPRODirectory firm Mise en Scène Design (@misenscenedesign). “I really like working off of other people’s prior history and possessions—not just coming in and foisting my vision on them entirely.” Tour the Upper West Side apartment brimming with personal treasures at the link in our bio. @chaivasarhelyi and @jimmychin know a thing or two about cultivating drama. The husband-and-wife filmmakers, who split their time between Wyoming and New York City, took home an Academy Award for their 2018 documentary, Free Solo, an edge-of-your-seat thriller that chronicled rock climber Alex Honnold’s epic quest to scale El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. For their Manhattan abode nestled among the peaks of the Upper East Side, the intrepid auteurs, working in concert with architect Damian Zunino and designer Britt Zunino of @studio_db, have crafted an entirely different kind of story—a three-dimensional tale of family and personal passion told through color, form, texture, and pattern. To design the interiors of this six-story town house in Chelsea, Amy Kolker of @janestreetprojects looked to very specific people and places for inspiration. One was the Maison de Verre in Paris, a steel-and-glass residence that was unthinkably modern at the time of its construction in 1932, and another was Adolf Loos, an Austro Hungarian architect who rejected adornment but embraced luxurious materials, sometimes covering entire rooms in marble or mahogany. As a longtime set designer and visual display expert for couture labels and luxury retailers, Kolker developed an extensive design vocabulary. When a friend approached her about transforming the interiors of white-walled residence spanning nearly 8,000 square feet, Kolker dug deep into her decorative repertoire. “This was my big debut as an interior designer,” she says. “And it was quite a bit of space to work with.” Tour the Moody and Maximalist NYC home at the link in our bio. Interior designer Lisa Koch knew she could transform the interiors of this 1937 property into an inviting and transporting oasis for hotelier Jeff Klein and his husband, producer John Goldwyn. With the help of architect Ward Jewell, nearly every inch of the house was overhauled, from the climbing rose-covered stucco exterior walls and dove gray shutters to intricate arched foyers and a walk-in walnut bar. A guest house was removed to maximize space for the gardens by landscape designer Lisa Zeder, and a large swimming pool was replaced with a smaller one at the rear of the property. Although their apartment was new, it wasn’t ready for them to move in. At least, that’s what this small family made up of a couple, their two-year-old boy, and a friendly dachshund thought. The home they had bought was missing something. “They weren’t satisfied with the finishings and the layout of the space. That’s why they entrusted us with carrying out a complete renovation to transform it into a warmer, more functional, and personalized place,” explains Not a Studio (@itsnotastudio). Built in 1968 by a prefab company called Techbuilt, the dwelling was undeniably charming—so much so that Sashya Thind's (@sashyathind) family swiftly made an offer, purchased it, and moved in. “Unlike my projects, there was no set vision—it was more of an evolution of ideas as we lived in the space and embraced it,” #ADPRODirectory designer Thind shares. The couple eventually imagined the home as a Tropical Modern oasis, inspired by the luminous garden houses of Geoffrey Bawa and Balkrishna Doshi while also paying homage to its New England setting.
