⚪Chiesa Madre di Gibellina, designed in 1972 by Italian architect and urban planner Ludovico Quaroni, stands as a powerful symbol of rebirth. It was conceived as part of the reconstruction of Gibellina Nuova, a new town built after the 1968 Belice earthquake devastated the original city in Sicily. The church’s monumental form, a geometric composition of a sphere intersecting a parallelepiped, draws inspiration from 18th-century utopian architects such as Étienne-Louis Boullée and Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, whose visionary works imagined architecture as a tool for shaping ideals. More than a religious space, Chiesa Madre represents a universal message of unity and exploration. The bold, futuristic design, often compared to a landed spacecraft, challenges conventional ecclesiastical architecture. It suggests a structure not confined to a single belief system but open to all, reflecting a spiritual openness and cosmic curiosity. Quaroni’s design captures the hope and imagination of a community rebuilding from ruins, making the church both a monument to memory and a vision of the unknown. 📸 @___marra, @clementevb, @lilyyill, @compoone, @okolo_architecture, @elenabraghieri, @giorgiomarafioti 🚀 Join @thepaacademy’s workshops to learn the most advanced tools in architecture from pioneering architects and designers! #parametricarchitecture #italy #chuch #religiousarchitecture #italianarchitecture
