Xi’an’s famous terracotta warriors are spectacular. Each individual (but cunningly mass-produced), not all have survived the passage of time, as the masses of terracotta shards dotting the site attest. No longer available ‘up close and personal’ as the Americans like to say, I was at least fortunate to have avoided the crowds. Of the three pits, Number 2 is the most massive, with seemingly endless rows of warriors, generals and horses lined up to accompany Emperor Qinshihuang into eternity. They were originally brightly-painted, but little remains of that now. As captivating as they are, the real source of amazement is the emperor’s tomb which lies under a massive earthen pyramid nearby. Or at least it should be. It has never been excavated and is rumoured to be a palace, complete with a subterranean garden, ‘stars’ in the ‘sky’ above, and rivers of mercury that were designed to flow until the end of time.
