All that glitters is not gold… sometimes it’s purple or pink. @NASAHubble captured this view of the nebula shown here, named Sh2-284, which lives 15,000 light-years away at the end of a spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy. Hubble snapped this image in infrared, meaning stars are visible that would otherwise be obscured by gas and dust in visible light. Sh2-284 is the birthplace of many young stars, with the newborns showing up as dense, glowing clusters of pink light amongst the clouds. It is also a region poor in elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, mimicking conditions of the early universe. These images help scientists study how these conditions influence star formation, and how that might have applied to the early days of our universe. Image description: Fluffy clouds of gray gas and dust obscure the background of space. Spots of denser gaseous knots appear rusty brown. Purple and pink stars sparkle all throughout the scene.
