Reputed for her radical appropriation of menswear, the iconic actress Marlene Dietrich was also an undeniable glamorous figure, and backstage at the @BrooklynMuseum before the unveiling of #DiorFall24, for which she was @MariaGraziaChiuri's major inspiration, that aspect of her style was out in force. The jet beaded mesh and tassels in particular recalled her screen and stage career, and a perfectly fitted jacket was a recreation of one Monsieur Dior had originally designed for her, its dragonfly embroideries borrowed from another archival piece. Carried by one of the models, a #LadyDior bag created by Faith Ringgold appeared on the runway as a tribute to the recently deceased American artist. Anticipation was building backstage before Monday’s #DiorFall24 show at the @BrooklynMuseum as the models lining up to take to the runway displayed some of the details of @MariaGraziaChiuri’s new collection. With the bond between the House and New York in the spotlight, prints of the latter grace lapels and a ‘Dior Toujours’ bag, while an archival flag motif colorfully enlivens a sporty top. Lurex and beading blend with tailoring in a nod to Marlene Dietrich, and the #LadyDior bag created by Dorothy Iannone honors the memory of the late artist. Embark on an audience-free exploration of the space inside the @BrooklyMuseum that played host to Monday evening’s unveiling of the #DiorFall24 collection by @MariaGraziaChiuri. Collective artist Claire Fontaine (@ForeignersEverywhere), a previous House collaborator, produced an installation of neon hand sculptures alluding to 70s-80s feminist protests suspended over a tiled floor inspired by old Palermo courtyards. Monsieur Dior was fond of “un coup de Trafalgar”, his term for energizing a show with a sudden, unexpected injection of color. For her #DiorFall24 show at the @BrooklynMuseum, @MariaGraziaChiuri employed a similar tactic with a tricolor print culled from the archives, originally designed as a scarf to mark the US Bicentennial in 1976. Its fusion of American and French flags distills the ethos behind this collection unveiled in New York, which also featured a plethora of inky interpretations of that city’s skyline and Paris’s, too, positioned on dresses, coats and #DiorBookTote bags alike, and to bold effect on urban wear separates. In addition to Marlene Dietrich, whose provocative appropriation of masculine attire was an important inspiration to @MariaGraziaChiuri, the duality of #DiorFall24 presented at @BrooklynMuseum also spotlights the hyper-feminine influence of Marilyn Monroe, who wore a backless Dior dress in her fabled final shoot, alluded to here in sensual, shoulder-baring looks. The House also honored the memory of the recently deceased American artist Faith Ringgold with the runway appearance of a Lady Dior bag previously revisited by the preeminent art world figure.
