〰️National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, also known as Weiwuying, designed by Dutch architecture firm @mecanoo_ and opened in 2018 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Occupying 141,000 square meters within a vast 470,000-square-meter subtropical park, the project transforms a former military base into the world’s largest single-roof performing arts center. Its fluid, organic form draws inspiration from the canopies of local banyan trees, creating a seamless connection between architecture and landscape. The center houses five major venues: the Opera House (2,236 seats), Concert Hall (1,981 seats), Playhouse (1,210 seats), Recital Hall (434 seats), and an Outdoor Theater that opens onto the park. Weiwuying reflects Taiwan’s evolving cultural vision and serves as a cornerstone of the National Performing Arts Center network, alongside the National Theater and Concert Hall in Taipei and the National Taichung Theater. 📌Designed by Valentiny HVP architectes, the Tower of Dreams and Longings was completed in 2004 as a gift from the City of Luxembourg to the City of Trier, marking the occasion of the German National Garden Show. Located near the Geocenter of the University of Trier, the tower rises from a five-meter-high artificial gravel mound and reaches a total height of 20 meters. Constructed from Corten steel, the material was selected for its connection to natural processes and its ability to weather over time without compromising structural integrity. The project draws inspiration from the medieval towers of San Gimignano, reinterpreted here as a contemporary urban landmark with a sculptural and symbolic presence. The tower is conceived as a walkable structure composed of three levels that open in different directions, forming a dynamic spatial experience. Key sightlines extend toward five European capitals, Paris, Lisbon, Belfast, Warsaw, and Athens, with each city name inscribed on the steel in alignment with its geographical orientation. These axes are intended to evoke broader cultural and spatial associations within the European context. At the highest level, a partially enclosed viewing platform frames a direct view toward Luxembourg City. ✨Haus Balma, by @kkaa_official, completed in 2022, stands at the base of the Graubünden Mountains in Vals, Switzerland, serving as the residential and commercial headquarters for Truffer AG, a renowned local manufacturer of Valser quartzite since 1983. Designed over a decade beginning in 2012, the building pays homage to the surrounding Alpine village with its pitched roof, traditional eaves, and locally sourced stone, while introducing a contemporary form reminiscent of a pagoda. The structure is organized around a central diagonal staircase, conceived as a symbolic “crack in the rock,” evoking the geological origins of the stone that defines the Truffer family’s craft. This central void unites the building’s functions, from a basement showroom and gathering space to offices on the lower levels and private residences above. The façade is composed of 882 quartzite stone panels and larch wood elements, suspended with over 5,000 precision attachment points using recessed stainless-steel clamps. These details create the appearance of the stone hovering in front of the structure, evoking a sense of balance between permanence and delicacy. The materials were sourced and fabricated through a collaborative process with Truffer AG, showcasing the potential of Valser stone, a material renowned for its silver shimmer and color variations, ranging from green to blue. ✨Reading Between the Lines is a permanent, site-specific artwork by the Belgian architectural duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, comprising Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh, completed in 2011 near Borgloon, Belgium. Commissioned by Z33 House for Contemporary Art, Design & Architecture as part of the public art exhibition ‘pit’, the project reinterprets the archetype of the local parish church through a sculptural, spatial language. Weighing 30 tons and constructed from approximately 2,000 steel columns, the structure is composed of stacked horizontal steel plates that form cross-sections of the church’s floor plan. These elements are held at uniform intervals, creating a layered, almost transparent volume that shifts visually as one approaches it. Depending on the viewer’s position, the church either appears as a massive, grounded object or seems to dissolve into the surrounding landscape. This intentional ambiguity engages the viewer in a dialogue between architecture, perception, and context. From within, the experience becomes abstract, lines frame fragments of the rural Limburg landscape, prompting both visual and cultural reflection. 〰️Wuxi Grand Theatre, completed in 2012 and designed by Helsinki-based @pesarchitects, stands as a monumental cultural landmark on a manmade peninsula along Taihu Lake in Wuxi, China. Following a first-prize win in a 2008 international design competition, the 78,000 m² theatre was conceived as a sculptural structure that engages directly with its prominent waterfront location, drawing comparisons to the Sydney Opera House. Rising to a height of 50 meters, the building features eight sweeping steel roof wings, reminiscent of butterfly wings, which not only define its silhouette but also provide essential solar protection. A fusion of advanced technology and local materials defines the theatre’s architectural identity. Thousands of LED lights embedded within the roof wings allow the building’s color to shift in harmony with the performances inside. A “forest” of 9-meter-tall light columns welcomes visitors at the entrance plaza, continuing through the central lobby and extending toward the lake. 📌Centre Pompidou-Metz, designed by @shigeruban and completed in 2010, is a contemporary art museum located in Metz, France. Spanning 11,330 m², the museum was envisioned as a response to two prevailing trends in museum architecture: the sculptural landmark approach exemplified by the Guggenheim Bilbao and the neutral adaptive reuse seen in projects like the Tate Modern. Ban sought a balance between impactful architectural presence and functional spaces for displaying art. The program is articulated into three long, tubular galleries, each 90 meters deep, arranged around a central hexagonal steel core. These gallery “tubes” are stacked and rotated to frame specific views of Metz’s historic landmarks, such as the cathedral and the central station, reinforcing a dialogue between the museum and the city. The centerpiece of the project is its distinctive timber roof structure, a hexagonal canopy inspired by traditional Asian woven hats. Made entirely of laminated timber, the roof is both a compressive and tensile shell that unifies the complex volumes beneath, including a round creation studio and a square auditorium block. This lightweight yet expressive roof reflects Ban’s ongoing interest in material innovation, developed through prior collaborations with Frei Otto and Arup’s Cecil Balmond. Beyond exhibition halls, the museum offers a fluid spatial sequence between interior and exterior, with accessible public areas like a large forum under the roof. 🌀Shanghai Grand Opera House by @snohetta is coming to life. The Opera House is taking shape in Shanghai’s Houtan neighborhood along the Huangpu River. Commissioned in 2017, its iconic roof, spiraling and fanning, extends throughout the entire project, shaping the lobby, halls, and all three auditoriums. Conceived as both a stage and a public gathering space, the opera roof will be fully accessible, hosting everything from large-scale events to everyday visits.
