As the Midwest sizzles through another heatwave, something unexpected is turning up the steam—millions of acres of cornfields. Known as "corn sweat," this quirky weather effect happens when corn plants release huge amounts of moisture into the air, enough to crank humidity up by 30 to 40 percent. This added moisture can make heatwaves more challenging—and dangerous—by reducing the body's ability to cool itself. Head to the link in bio to discover what scientists say about these weird weather phenomena and what they reveal about our warming climate. Photograph by Richard Hamilton Smith / Getty Images
