The Night Surrealism Crashed High Society In December 1972, Marie-Hélène de Rothschild transformed her family’s Château de Ferrières into a surrealist ball, inviting Paris elite’s to dine among what at the time was set to be beloved as dream logic and disorientation. The invitation could only be read in a mirror; and guests arrived through candlelit fog wearing antlers, birdcages, and clocks as masks. The “Surrealist Ball” was the moment art infiltrated aristocracy. Influenced by Dalí and the lingering pulse of surrealism, Rothschild turned the iconic and yet to the day what feels like today as a disturbing dinner, into A full fledged performance.
