“La Resurrezione” is the moment the Vatican lets chaos speak in the open air, by Pericle Fazzini (1977). La Resurrezione is a monumental bronze and brass sculpture by Italian artist Pericle Fazzini that looms behind the stage in the Paul VI Audience Hall of the Vatican. Installed in 1977, it shows Christ rising from what is represented as a crater caused by a nuclear explosion in the Garden of Gethsemane. In the early 1980s, Tinariwen emerged as the unmistakable voice of the Tuareg people of the Sahara. Formed in the desert borderlands of Algeria and Mali, the band’s roots lie in a generation which at the time was displaced by drought, colonial borders and armed conflict. Their leader, Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, witnessed his father’s execution as part of the Tuareg rebellion, taught himself guitar in exile and helped forge the group’s identity. Tinariwen more than adapting traditional Tuareg music, electrified it, mixing roaring guitars, acoustic riffs and desert rhythms. The result is what many call “desert blues”: a genre grounded in longing, displacement and resistance. Their songs address exile, land, identity and freedom, a narrative rarely heard in Western music so candidly. By the early 2000s, they broke into international consciousness with the release of The Radio Tisdas Sessions (2001) and global tours. A Grammy win followed. The Tao Men of Lanyu and Their Ceremonial Helmets Off the coast of Taiwan lies Lanyu, or Orchid Island, home to the Tao people, also known as Yami. Settled around 800 years ago by migrants from the Philippines’ Batanes Islands, the Tao rely on fishing and boat-building, which form the backbone of their culture and spiritual practices. Traditional Tao clothing is simple and practical: men wear loincloths and vests, women cover their upper bodies with short vests and aprons. For ceremonies, vibrant blue-and-white vests are added, along with striking accessories,women wear octagonal wooden hats, men wear silver helmets. These silver helmets, made by melting Spanish silver coins that reached the island via trade routes through the Philippines, are not for protection. Instead, they signify wealth and hold spiritual significance, used to bless homes, fields, boats, and even to attract fish at the start of the fishing season. The helmets grow larger as wealth accumulates, embodying both status and tradition in Tao society. With modern emigration threatening the continuity of these practices, the silver helmets remain a powerful symbol of the Tao people’s connection to the sea, their heritage, and their enduring cultural identity.
