It’s located about 2,400 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus—hence its name. It’s home to a collection of baby stars and a large protostar, which is an actively-forming star. Cepheus A’s protostar is responsible for half of the region’s brightness. Must be a full moon, feels like one of those nights 🎵⁣ If you’re in search of something to do this weekend, look up! The next full moon will be on Sunday, Feb. 1. What you see on the Moon with just your eyes will vary depending on your eyesight. Give yourself plenty of time for your eyes to adjust and look carefully.⁣ Without binoculars, you’ll be able to see a few landmarks like Aristarchus Plateau, Mare Serenitatis (the “Sea of Serenity,” where the Apollo 17 astronauts landed), and Mare Fecunditatis. Using binoculars or a telescope will reveal more details, like cliffs. Red light, green light 🚦 On Jan. 19, 2026, NASA astronaut Chris Williams snapped this photo of an aurora borealis as the @ISS passed over Europe. The Earth was shadowed by night, but aglow with more than just city lights. An aurora occurs when energized particles in space collide with particles in Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in a bright and colorful light show. When it happens in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s called an aurora borealis, or the northern lights. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s called an aurora australis, or southern lights. These light shows are typically found close to Earth’s northern and southern poles. But when Earth is hit with a huge flow of energized particles, like during a solar storm, auroras can stretch farther toward the equator. Say hello to Phobos! In this photo snapped by @NASAHubble, we were able to catch the tiny Martian moon right next to its planet, illustrating their massive size difference. Mars is about half the size of Earth, with a diameter of around 4,200 miles. Phobos is minuscule in comparison, however, measuring 17 miles in diameter at its widest point. Unfortunately for this little friend of Mars, you cannot spell “friend” without “end.” Like Icarus flying too close to the Sun, Phobos is moving a little too close to the Red Planet, approaching at a rate of six feet every hundred years. This means that it is set to crash into Mars in 50 million years, or break up into a ring like the ones that Saturn and Uranus have. But no matter what happens, Mars will not be doomed to loneliness. Mars has another moon in addition to Phobos, named Deimos. Both are thought to be captured asteroids and have a lumpy, irregular shape—unlike larger, spherical moons. Out of the two tiny Martian moons, Phobos is the largest, with Deimos only measuring nine miles at its widest diameter. Catch a glimpse of this celestial meetup! On Jan. 23, the Moon and Saturn will form a conjunction in the night sky. This means they’ll look close together despite being far apart in space. This conjunction will give us an opportunity to easily spot Saturn in the sky. To spot Saturn, look to the western night sky on the 23rd, just below the Moon. Happy skywatching! Every January, we pause to honor members of the NASA family lost in our space exploration program – including the crews of Apollo 1, Challenger STS-51L, and Columbia STS-107 – by celebrating their lives, their bravery, and their contributions to human spaceflight.⁣ Safety is a key value at NASA. ✨You know together we're glowin' / Gonna be, gonna be golden ✨ @NASAHubble captured an image of a newly-forming star in the constellation Orion, also known as the HUNTR/X – er, we mean "the hunter." Intense stellar winds from this developing star, shining bright to the left of the image, have carved out a cavity in the surrounding cloud of gas and dust. It’s part of the Orion Molecular Cloud complex, which lies within the constellation's “sword” roughly 1,300 light-years from Earth. Galactic upcycling ♻️ @NASAWebb captured a new close-up of an old favorite, the Helix Nebula. We've seen this region before with telescopes like @NASAHubble and the retired Spitzer Space Telescope, but Webb zooms into this dying star with a deeper, more detailed view. The first image shows Webb's view of the blistering winds of hot gas from a dying star crashing into colder shells of dust and gas that were shed earlier in the star's life. Like oil trying to push through water, the differences in density (and speed) of the material give the nebula this incredible structure. Leftover cores of dying Sun-like stars like this one are called white dwarfs. While out of the frame, this white dwarf lies right at the heart of the nebula. Its radiation lights up the surrounding gas, creating an environment for complex molecules to form within dust clouds. This interaction is the catalyst for the raw material from which new planets may one day form in other star systems. It reminds us how stars recycle their material back into the cosmos.
