Celestial fireworks 🎇 This sparkling image, released in Hubble's 21st year, shows a young cluster of stars surrounded by interstellar gas and dust. Called NGC 3603, this star cluster is about 20,000 light-years away. Most of the stars in the cluster were born around the same time, but their difference in mass means they are at different life stages. About 160,000 light-years away, the star cluster NGC 1850 shines in this image from Hubble's 33rd year. Like most globular clusters, NGC 1850 is a spherical collection of densely packed stars held together by mutual gravitational attraction. Unlike most globular clusters, however, the stars of NGC 1850 are relatively young. Globular clusters with young stars such as NGC 1850 are not present in our own Milky Way galaxy, and NGC 1850 resides within a satellite galaxy to ours, called the Large Magellanic Cloud. NGC 1850 is approximately 100 million years old. A light show on Uranus🪐 An international team of astronomers used over 10 years of Hubble observations to refine the planet’s rotation period at an accuracy 1,000 times greater than before, using the ultraviolet light emitted by its aurorae. Uranus’ aurorae, unlike those of other planets in our solar system, behave unpredictably due to its highly tilted magnetic field, which is not aligned with its rotational axis. These findings will help astronomers understand Uranus’ magnetic field and provide vital information for future missions. Find out more at the link in our bio! Shine bright like NGC 6397! ✨ This star cluster glitters with the light from hundreds of thousands of stars. At 7,800 light-years away, this is one of the closest globular clusters to Earth. Globular clusters are roughly spherical collections of stars bound together by their mutual gravity. The cluster's blue stars are near the end of their lives. These stars have used up their hydrogen fuel that makes them shine. Now, they're converting helium to energy in their cores, which fuses at a higher temperature – resulting in a blue color, as seen in this Hubble view from the mission's 18th year. To celebrate Hubble’s 35th anniversary, ESA is sharing a new image series that updates previously released Hubble targets with the latest Hubble data. This new image of the dazzling young star cluster NGC 346 is the first to combine Hubble observations made at infrared, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths, creating an intricately detailed view of this vibrant star-forming factory. NGC 346 is home to more than 2,500 newborn stars, the most massive of which blaze with an intense blue light in this image. The glowing pink nebula and snakelike dark clouds are remnants of the birthplace of stars in the cluster. NGC 346 is located in the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way that lies 200,000 light-years away in the constellation Tucana. This brilliant image of stars, glowing gas, and interstellar dust shows the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300. Released in 2005, this image is so big that two adjacent pointings of Hubble were necessary to capture the whole thing. Barred spirals differ from normal spiral galaxies in that the arms of the galaxy do not curve all the way into the core, but are connected to the two ends of a straight bar of stars containing the nucleus at its center. An au-royal view! @NASAWebb captured bright auroras on Neptune, confirming their presence on the planet. This image of Neptune combines @NASAHubble’s image of Neptune from the telescope’s Wide Field Camera 3 with Webb’s Near-Infared Spectograph, showing auroral activity in cyan splotches alongside white clouds. Auroras occur when energetic particles, often originating from the Sun, become trapped in a planet’s magnetic field and eventually strike the upper atmosphere. The energy released during these collisions creates the signature glow. All of the other gas giants in our solar system have aurora too. Neptune’s auroras was the last to be confirmed with imagery, although NASA’s Voyager 2 flyby detected hints of their presence in 1989. Bright blue clusters of star formation and red clumps of hydrogen shine among dark lanes of dust in this new Hubble image of the galaxy NGC 4536. Located about 50 million light-years away, NGC 4536 is what’s known as a “starburst” galaxy – meaning that it forms stars at a tremendous rate that uses up the gas in the galaxy relatively quickly.
