About 160,000 light-years away, the star cluster NGC 1850 shines in this image from Hubble's 33rd year. Like most globular clusters, NGC 1850 is a spherical collection of densely packed stars held together by mutual gravitational attraction. Unlike most globular clusters, however, the stars of NGC 1850 are relatively young. Globular clusters with young stars such as NGC 1850 are not present in our own Milky Way galaxy, and NGC 1850 resides within a satellite galaxy to ours, called the Large Magellanic Cloud. NGC 1850 is approximately 100 million years old. We're sharing one outstanding image from each year of Hubble’s mission to celebrate its upcoming 35th birthday – counting down to a new series of anniversary images! Stay tuned for more, and get caught up at the link in our bio. Image description: A yellow star cluster glitters near the top center of the image. A swathe of cloudy, blue nebulosity streaks vertically to the cluster's left, though fainter blue clouds cover the whole image. Distant stars shine through the clouds against a black backdrop of space. Image credit: NASA, ESA and P.
