The Fashion References from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure by Manga Artist Hirohiko Araki (1987-2000)

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a cult-favorite manga series created by Japanese artist Hirohiko Araki, known for its dramatic storytelling, supernatural battles, and eccentric style. Beyond its wild plots and powers, JoJo stands out for its deep connection to the world of fashion. 

From the very beginning, Araki pulled inspiration from haute couture, vintage runway shows, and iconic fashion photography, filling the series with characters who pose, dress, and move like living works of art. In JoJo, fashion isn’t just influence — it’s the lifeblood of the story’s unforgettable visual identity.

Located in Kyoto, the building is an example of kanban architecture, where the façade takes on a bold, sign-like character — in this case, featuring face-like elements that resemble eyes and a nose. 

Originally designed for a graphic designer (who still resides on the upper floors), the ground level has recently been repurposed into a gallery and shop space.

Alan Rath began constructing sculptures that fused robotics with computer-generated video—works he designed, machined, and programmed entirely on his own. moving with a playful unpredictability, echoing the quirks of human behavior through mechanical form.

By 1998, after over a decade immersed in these systems, Rath reflected: “Our consciousness is fundamentally altered because we grew up in an artificial environment… Machinery is not unnatural. It’s a reflection of the people who make it.”

The Soloist FW18: Takahiro Miyashita’s Dystopian Elegance

In the Fall/Winter 2018 season, Takahiro Miyashita’s The Soloist unveiled a collection that stood out for its innovative fusion of styles. The designs combined military elements with technical fabrics, creating a look that was both avant-garde and functional. 

Models walked the runway in ensembles that resembled modern armor, featuring oversized cloaks.

Yohji Yamamoto and Adidas: a relationship between The Future of Fashion and the Legacy of Sport (2002-2024)

Y-3 is where high fashion meets sportswear, a groundbreaking fusion of Yohji Yamamoto’s avant-garde aesthetic and Adidas’ performance innovation. Launched in 2002, it was ahead of its time—long before luxury-streetwear collaborations became the norm.

Yamamoto, known for his deconstructed tailoring and monochrome minimalism, saw in Adidas the perfect canvas for his vision. But his relationship with the brand began well before Y-3. In the late ’90s, he collaborated with Adidas on a limited series of footwear, experimenting with the intersection of sports and high fashion. This early partnership laid the foundation for what would become Y-3, setting the stage for a sleek, futuristic line that redefined sneaker culture and technical apparel.

From the iconic, tech-infused garments, Y-3  and Yohji Yamamoto have been shaping the game for over two decades.

For Undercover’s 35th anniversary, Jun Takahashi revisits his 2004-2005 A/W “but beautiful… part parasitic, part stuffed” collection, reinterpreting its surreal, handcrafted aesthetic.

Originally inspired by Anne-Valérie Dupond’s plush creations and Patti Smith’s effortless style, the collection now shifts toward mature, wearable elegance, blending layered textures, organic asymmetry, and hauntingly beautiful silhouettes.

At 35, Takahashi embraced raw experimentation. At 55, he reflects on its evolution.
