More than 500 of the finest guitars from the golden age of American guitar making have found a new home in The Met’s Department of Musical Instruments. 🎶 The collection features standout examples such as Leo Fender’s first guitar, crafted in 1948; a Gibson J-50 acoustic from 1955 used by Delta blues musician Mississippi John Hurt; and the 1959 sunburst Les Paul played by Keith Richards during The Rolling Stones’ debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. Almost all of these instruments remain in exceptional playing condition and will be heard in performances, recordings, and educational programs at the Museum—including study by contemporary guitar builders. To this day, these guitars are considered the aspirational tools of choice for some of the world’s finest musicians. 🎸 Leo Fender’s first guitar, made in 1948. 🎸 The sunburst Les Paul guitar, made 1959. 🎸 Gibson J-50 acoustic guitar, made 1955.
