NOW ON VIEW—The Met's arts of Africa, the Ancient Americas, and Oceania galleries have returned in a reimagined Michael C. Rockefeller Wing! Spanning 40,000 square feet and designed by Kulapat Yantrasast, the galleries present distinct collections that represent diverse cultural traditions, from as early as 3000 BCE to the present. Discover major acquisitions on view for the first time, including historic and contemporary works in the arts of Africa galleries, light-sensitive ancient Andean textiles, and powerful new commissions by Indigenous Pacific artists. #MetRockefellerWing

Rockefeller Wing, featuring the Museum’s collections of the arts of Africa, the ancient Americas, and Oceania. When John Singer Sargent saw Spanish dancer Carmencita perform, he was captivated and knew he had to paint her.✨ Join Met curator Stephanie Herdrich and @museeorsay curator Caroline Corbeau-Parsons for a closer look at “La Carmencita (Carmen Dauset Moreno),” on loan from the Musée d’Orsay for “Sargent and Paris.” In this bold portrait, Sargent captures her striking presence in a dazzling yellow costume and powerful pose. First shown in 1892, and later purchased by the French state, the painting confirmed his place among the masters of his time. See Sargent and Paris at The Met through August 3 and at the Musée d’Orsay starting September 23. Dans ce portrait audacieux, Sargent capture sa présence frappante dans un costume jaune éblouissant et une pose puissante. More than 500 of the finest guitars from the golden age of American guitar making have found a new home in The Met’s Department of Musical Instruments. 🎶 The collection features standout examples such as Leo Fender’s first guitar, crafted in 1948; a Gibson J-50 acoustic from 1955 used by Delta blues musician Mississippi John Hurt; and the 1959 sunburst Les Paul played by Keith Richards during The Rolling Stones’ debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. Almost all of these instruments remain in exceptional playing condition and will be heard in performances, recordings, and educational programs at the Museum—including study by contemporary guitar builders. To this day, these guitars are considered the aspirational tools of choice for some of the world’s finest musicians. 🎸 Leo Fender’s first guitar, made in 1948. 🎸 The sunburst Les Paul guitar, made 1959. 🎸 Gibson J-50 acoustic guitar, made 1955.
