First shown in 1892, and later purchased by the French state, the painting confirmed his place among the masters of his time. Dans ce portrait audacieux, Sargent capture sa présence frappante dans un costume jaune éblouissant et une pose puissante. Exposé pour la première fois en 1892, puis acheté par l’État français, ce tableau a confirmé la place de Sargent parmi les maîtres de son temps. L’exposition “Sargent and Paris” est présentée au Met jusqu’au 3 août, puis elle sera visible au musée d’Orsay à partir du 23 septembre sous le titre “Sargent. Les années parisiennes (1874-1884)”.
